A password cracker is software used to recover unencrypted passwords from captured or discovered password hashes. This can be used for determining a forgotten password, testing for weak password, or more nefariously to gain unauthorized access to a system or encrypted document. For in-depth coverage of how these tools function, please see Wikipedia's password cracking page.
